ORCHID - JOHNSONVILLE Kitchen Renovation

Johnsonville, Wellington.

Dec 2023

This kitchen was tired and gloomy, dominated by a large central structure built to house the fridge. This feature weighed down the space and disrupted the natural flow between the kitchen and adjoining living areas.

By removing this and reworking the layout, the new design opens the space completely, creating a seamless connection between the kitchen, lounge, and dining areas. The result is a dramatic shift — not just within the kitchen itself, but across the entire open-plan living space.

The brief was clear: modern, light and white. Our highly engaged client had a clear vision, which was enhanced through thoughtful suggestions for smart decisions to support aesthetics and longevity. Hi-gloss cabinetry brings a crisp, easy-clean finish, while high-end appliances have modernised the way the kitchen will be used and maintained. A standout feature of the project is the custom appliance hub cupboard — a first-of-its-kind inclusion that adds both practicality and a refined sense of organisation.

The finished kitchen feels expansive, clean, and effortlessly functional — a space that not only transforms how the home looks, but how it’s lived in, with a result the client was genuinely thrilled with.

A key feature of this project is the custom appliance hub pantry — a solution developed through close collaboration to balance practicality, clean design & safety.
The goal was to keep benchtops clear by housing everyday appliances out of sight, while still maintaining easy access at an ergonomic height. We maintained continuity by installing a matching benchtop within the pantry and structuring the cabinets to match the height of the rest of the kitchen. This ensured the appliance hub felt like a true continuation of bench space, tucked away behind closed doors.
Integrated task lighting is activated via door operation, providing immediate illumination. Also connected to the door operation is a shut-off switch to instantly cease the power supply to the outlets within the cupboard. Safety was a critical component of the design, ensuring any appliances - e.g. a toaster - are unable to be left operating when the cupboard is closed, mitigating potential fire risk.
The result is a feature that delivers on luxury, functionality, and safety in equal measure, brought to life with the creative expertise of our co-owned company Stripped Electrical.
